A Week of Learning, Collaboration, and Inspiration

Day 1: A Week of Learning Begins in Kisumu
The SGS International Training officially kicked off in Kisumu, Kenya, bringing together 36 experts in sustainability, sport, and youth engagement from six countries across Europe and Africa. The first day focused on building connections, sharing expectations, and introducing the vision behind the SGS project. Through interactive activities and discussions, participants explored how sport can be used as a powerful tool for sustainability, inclusion, and community development. A visit to St. Teresa Kibuye Senior School provided an inspiring first opportunity to engage with young people and experience Education through Sport in action.
Day 2: Discovering the Power of Education Through Sport
The second day immersed participants in the principles of non-formal learning and Education through Sport. Through hands-on workshops and collaborative group work, participants explored creative ways to use sport to promote sustainability and engage young people. The learning continued beyond the training room during a visit to St. Mark Nyabera Junior School, where participants tested activities and experienced firsthand how sport can create meaningful learning opportunities.
Day 3: Exploring Inclusion, Equality, and Community Impact
Day three focused on the social impact of sport and its ability to bring people together. Through discussions and practical exercises, participants examined topics such as social inclusion, gender equality, and human rights. The day also featured a visit to KiYA – Kisumu Young Agripreneurs, where participants learned how young people in the local community are driving sustainable change through innovation, entrepreneurship, and collective action.
Day 4: Bringing SGS Resources to Life
Participants spent day four exploring the tools and resources being developed through the SGS project. They were introduced to the Digital Knowledge Hub and the online learning modules, gaining the opportunity to test content, share feedback, and discuss how these resources can support youth workers, educators, and sports organisations. A visit to the KUAP Vocational Center provided an additional opportunity to see how digital learning can contribute to community development and lifelong learning.
Day 5: Turning Ideas into Action
After several days of learning and exchange, participants shifted their focus towards implementation. Through sessions on project development and funding opportunities, they explored how to transform ideas into practical initiatives that can create impact at the local level. Working in international teams, participants developed concepts that linked sport, sustainability, and youth engagement. As the day came to a close, the group gathered by the shores of Lake Victoria, taking time to reflect on the week’s experiences while enjoying one of Kisumu’s most iconic views.
Day 6: Looking Ahead Together
The final day was dedicated to reflection, evaluation, and future planning. Participants presented their action plans, shared key insights gained throughout the week, and discussed how they would apply SGS approaches in their own organisations and communities. The training concluded with a certification ceremony and closing session, celebrating not only the knowledge acquired but also the partnerships, friendships, and shared commitment built during the week.

From 6 to 11 July 2026, the SGS International Training transformed Kisumu into a hub of learning, dialogue, and international cooperation. Through workshops, school visits, community engagement activities, intercultural evenings, and collaborative project development, participants explored how sport can contribute to more sustainable, inclusive, and empowered communities. Beyond the sessions themselves, the training fostered lasting connections and a shared commitment to carrying the SGS vision forward across Europe and Africa.
